"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a key snag: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. A host of high-profile supporters have publicly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a close unit. Their music videos often show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"So all are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Award Nod

The group are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent toughness demanded a fresh approach – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

One man left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide audience.

However the sister act will forever be their number one priority.

"We have been making music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
