Similar to the recent storm swept through the northwest the night before, Manchester City blew Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This outcome marked successive WSL defeats for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them seven points off the league leaders with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capability to manage league and continental soccer with a small team has been a widely debated subject since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would truly test this fortitude. Sadly for the opposition, they seemed tired throughout, the landmark win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had attempted to rotate the squad with a handful of alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all provided vigor, although the dropping of the on-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

City, in contrast, have no such workload worries. Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since returning from a fitness issue.

Overpowering Start

The trouble started to gather for Skinner and his team from the opening minute. This was a show of the strength from City whose potent forward line played with and tore United open with a sublime initial 45 minutes performance that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

This left the home team completely dominant and had Manchester United all at sea. Prior to this match, the away side had allowed just six in this domestic competition but they collapsed in the presence of City’s creative prowess.

Initial Opportunities

The warning signs came quickly when Miedema used her power to push Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the heart of everything in the beginning, using the space left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her crosses were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had several attacks forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the flanks but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. City, in the meantime, dominated the ball, probing their rivals and trying to draw them out of their organization.

Scoring Spree

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A cross to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was Manchester City's 7th goal from a cross of the campaign.

They extended their advantage with another pair of goals just before the interval. When Rose was able to maraud through the middle from defense, the pitch opened up for City. The prominent Casparij collected the pass on the wing before sending a precise low cross for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a quick turnover in possession saw Hemp allowed the room to drive a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The primary change came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the match. Former City player Park came most likely to score, rattling the upright, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and did not manage to record a single shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have added to their advantage when a superb Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to beat any side who placed above them last season, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a commanding situation after nine games.
